“MONTAGUE CHARMAN - MASTER of DESIGN”
A retrospective of educator / artist (1894 - 1986)
Lowery Enterprises’ continual goal is to offer a visual educational experience in antiques & arts. In this Special Exhibit and Sale, we are pleased to work with: THE BRADFORD TRUST ART & ANTIQUES - Harwich Port, Mass. The exhibit will be curated by Roy Mennell. There will be 40 plus works offered
from the Charman Estate, many available to the public for the first time.
With a international reputation for fabric design, Montague Charman was a professor at Syracuse University for 37 years,. Mr. Charman carried on a dual career. Utlizing his design skills, he created “organic structure” in
his mind before setting his brush to canvas or paper as an artist. |

Charman began exhibiting at Syracuse Museum of Fine Arts (now the Everson Museum of Art) in the late 1920’s followed by exhibits with the Philadelphia Watercolor Club, Art Institute of Chicago, Albright Art Gallery, Salt Lake City, Munson-Williams-Proctor among others. He won many awards along the way and became a member of the American Watercolor Society. The book, “Watercolor Demonstrated”, Watson-Guptill publisher, has a chapter written by him devoted to
his technique with illustrations showing how a painting develops.
His works are also in many museums, including: Everson Museum (Syracuse), Munson-Williams-Proctor Institute, Municipal Collection of Salt Lake City,
Springville Museum of Art (Utah), Brigham Young University (Utah), Brooks| Memorial Museum (Tenn.)
